THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS
01. Is online therapy effective?
Positive results have been found for in-person therapy as well as online therapy. There are pros and cons for both and it really depends on your personal preference. Online therapy can be more convenient as there is no need to travel and can take place in the comfort of your home. For people who may not be able to travel for whatever reason, this option can be easier. For example, some people with physical health difficulties or extreme anxiety may struggle to attend in-person and may prefer online therapy. Also if you are caring for young children, it may be easier to attend an online session, rather than in-person.
Some clients prefer in-person therapy as they find travelling to and from their sessions gives them some thinking time, in order to prepare for the session. Some people prefer to be in a physical therapy space rather than their home environment.
It really goes down to your personal preference. You may wish to start sessions in-person and then convert to online. I am happy to accommodate and this is something we can discuss together.
02. How long does therapy last?
The length of therapy is your choice and really depends on the issues you wish to discuss. Typically clients book 6 sessions initially, we then have a review. Therapy typically lasts between 12-18 sessions but it can be less or more depending on your therapy goals.
03. Is it confidential?
Yes sessions are confidential. Whether we meet in a clinic room or online. I abide by the guidelines stipulated by HCPC and BPS. Everything we discuss remains between us. I do make some electronic notes, which are saved in a password protected document. This is to help me think about the sessions during the week. No one else has access to these notes. I delete all notes after 6 years (as stipulated by the HCPC guidelines).
There are some exceptions to the above. I would need to break confidentiality if I am worried about your welfare or the welfare of others, but I would always discuss this with you first. If you have any further questions about this, please ask me.
04. How can I prepare for my first session?
It is normal to feel anxious before starting therapy. If you are attending in person, you may find it helpful to plan your route and leave early in case it takes longer than expected. If you are joining online, you may wish to check your internet connection and make sure that zoom is working. If you arrive to your session late, you may be flustered and not feel prepared.
You may find it helpful to make a note of the topics you wish to discuss before the session. Some clients find it helpful to bring a notebook and pen to their sessions so they can make a note of important issues we discuss. This acts as a reminder for them between the sessions.
Try and keep an open mind and trust the therapy process. Therapy is not easy, it is not meant to be, but it can be extremely helpful as well. If you are anxious before the session, you may want to take a few deep breaths beforehand. If there is anything I can do to help you feel more comfortable in your sessions, please let me know.
